CHAPTER 12

KEY #6: COVETING

Donna Schambach

My first understanding of the word “covet” came from the King James Version of the Bible, and I learned it as something not to do. Of course, I’m speaking of the tenth Commandment found in Exodus 20, in which God specifically demanded we never covet or “strongly desire” our neighbor’s house, spouse, employees, animals, or anything that belongs to our neighbor.

That kind of coveting can create false idols in our lives and keep us distracted from God’s purposes, not to mention separate us from friends and neighbors. God had a reason to squelch that kind of coveting in our lives.

As I continued to study the Bible I discovered the word “covet” in the apostle Paul’s discourse on spiritual gifts: “But covet earnestly the best gifts…” (1 Corinthians 12:31 KJV). Throughout the years I read it many, many times, but I didn’t truly understand its instruction until I was in full-time ministry in my adult years. Paul was giving an instruction on how to have spiritual gifts operate in our lives. We must earnestly, strongly desire them, particularly the ones needed for specific needs at any given moment.

So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts. But now let me show you a way of life that is best of all (1 Corinthians 12:31 NLT).

Strongly desiring the gifts is much more than entertaining a giddy thought such as, Oooh, I’d really like to heal the sick and cast out devils! Thinking about the gifts is one thing, coveting them is yet another.

Coveting has to do with going after God in prayer, fasting, and specifically asking God to bring more revelation and faith for operating in the gifts. We covet or passionately desire spiritual gifts in the same way we long for and pursue the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

I want to be careful to say that this is not an issue of expecting to wait a long time for them, waiting until God thinks we are spiritually mature enough. Nor is it a matter of earning the gifts as a kind of holiness badge. Coveting is about earnestly desiring God’s agenda for our lives. Coveting involves longing and searching for all the treasures the Spirit wants to share with us.

I have found as I spend significant time with Him, He makes it a point to take me into His inner storeroom where the treasures lie. He loves to take out His precious treasures and show them to me. He has shown me some, but I know there are so many more for me to see!

Everyone’s walk with the Holy Spirit is unique. For me, He has revealed the gifts one at a time and on His own timetable. Some gifts came immediately after my asking for them; others I have waited awhile to see them manifest in my meetings.

I remember when I first started to covet the gifts, with extended times of prayer and fasting. My very next mission trip was to Eastern Europe. I was ministering
